Andrew Scheer introduces the Universal Tax Cut, a tax cut focused on you

Over the past four years, Canadians find themselves working harder than ever, yet they feel they are falling further and further behind.

Justin Trudeau promised Canadians that he would be different. He promised that he understood the challenges facing the middle class, that he had a plan to help. Justin Trudeau is not as advertised.

Under Trudeau, Canada’s wealthiest corporations not only got to help themselves to hundreds of millions in handouts, but Trudeau actually allowed them to rewrite Canada’s laws so they could escape prosecution for serious crimes.

While this was happening, Trudeau was busy implementing his signature policy: a carbon tax that drives up the costs of essentials like gas, home eating, and groceries, with low and middle-class Canadians to be hardest hit.

Only Andrew Scheer and Canada’s Conservatives have a plan to put more money back in your pocket so you and your family can get ahead. Today, by announcing the Universal Tax Cut, a tax cut targeted at the lowest income bracket, Andrew Scheer, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives is making a long overdue change to Canada’s tax system — by ensuring that, finally, there is a tax cut that is focused on you.

THE ISSUE

  • Today, Canadian families are under pressure and worried about their future. They have less money in their pockets at the end of the month. Nearly half of Canadian families are less than $200 away from insolvency at the end of each month.
  • Over the past four years, 80 per cent of middle-class Canadians have seen their taxes go up by an average of $800 per year.
  • In one of his first tax measures, Justin Trudeau cancelled tax credits to help working parents afford kids sports or music classes for their children. He also stripped away tax credits to help low and middle-class Canadians afford transit passes, or to help struggling students afford textbooks.
  • With his planned increase, the Trudeau Carbon Tax and accompanying ‘fuel standard’ will drive up the price of gas by 31 cents/ litre.
  • One of the worst parts of the Trudeau Carbon Tax is how it particularly targets household essentials that low and middle-income families depend on it. With his planned increase the Trudeau Carbon Tax would raise the price of natural gas to households in Ontario by $469 per year. In total, for example, the cost to Ontario households could be $1,151 per year.
  • The tax cut will be phased in responsibly, we will begin by reducing the rate to 14.5 per cent on January 1, 2021, then to 14 per cent on January 1, 2022, and to 13.75 per cent on January 1, 2023. The Universal Tax Cut will be fully implemented within a four-year mandate.

THE PLAN

  • With the Universal Tax Cut, an Andrew Scheer-led Conservative government will put more money in your pocket by lowering the tax rate for the lowest income tax bracket from 15 per cent to 13.75 per cent.
  • The lowest income tax bracket covers earned income between $12,069 and $47,630. This means that the relative benefits of the Universal Tax Cut will be focused on low- and middle-income Canadians.
  • Individual taxpayers could save as much as $440 on their income taxes, while a family of two people earning an average salary would save over $850 in income taxes.

THE CHOICE

  • In 2015 Trudeau ran on change. Now he is forced to run on his record.
  • Do you want four more years of higher taxes for you and your family, and bigger handouts for well-connected corporations?
  • Do you want four more years of you working harder, but can’t seem to get ahead while the Liberals allow lobbyists and insiders to rewrite the rules for their own benefit?
  • Do you want four more years of steadily increasing carbon taxes consuming more and more of your family budget, and putting a better life for you, your children and your aging parents increasingly out of reach?
  • After Justin Trudeau proved he was not as advertised last time, are you prepared to trust his slick sales pitch once again?
  • On October 21st you can choose an Andrew Scheer-led Conservative government that will put more money in your pocket by:
    • Taking the GST off home heating costs
    • Scrapping the Trudeau Carbon Tax
    • Making maternity benefits tax-free
    • Introducing a Green Public Transit Tax Credit
  • And, now you can also count on Andrew Scheer to help you get ahead by delivering a tax cut that is finally focused on you, the Universal Tax Cut, with the average family saving over $850 on their taxes each and every year.

It’s time for you to get ahead.
